By Mandy Stead During the Iraq war that between 2003 and 2006, the united states army committed a series of human rights violations against prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison near Bagdad. The violations included murder, sexual and physical abuse, rape, torturer, sodomy, humiliating and dehumanizing prisoners. In 2004 the abuse that was carried out was exposed by the publication of images that were taken by the soldiers that carried out the violations. This paper will be looking at what social psychology can teach us about what happened at Abu Ghraib. The abuse took place in tier 1A on the night shift. The soldiers involved were all reserve soldiers who were not prepared or trained for this mission. They were asked to interrogate the detainees ‘take the gloves off’ to extract information out of them. The soldiers were pressured into crossing the line to gain information by the centre intelligence agency, tier 1A was known as the interrogation hold. One detained was mentally ill, he covered himself in faeces every day, the soldiers would have to role him in sand so he wouldn’t smell so bad and they named him ‘Shitboy’. What was he doing in an interrogation hold? This is one example that shows the level of humiliation and dehumanisation that went on. World War II Germany Fonzo lives in Berlin, Germany with his brother Norbert and their best friend Hans. They did everything together, sports, school, and other activities. Fonzo and Hans are in the 12th grade and Norbert is in the 11th grade. One day they where just walking around together after school and saw a important looking car with a red and black Swastika on the sides with little flags on the front hood of the car also. They new that is was the The National Socialist German Workers Party or the (Nazi Party). They where good people just trying to get Germany out of debt and get them in a good economy. The man running for president was Adolf Hitler and he was a smart guy. All of his plans where going to help Germany with debt and†¦show more content†¦Later that year after Fonzo and Hans helping Hitler win his election and becoming president they now have to appoint a vice president which of course since its been 2 years Norbert has just graduated school and Fonzo and Hans tell Hitler that Norbert is very smart and would be a useful vice president. So Hitler agrees to appointing him to vice president and now they all are apart of the Nazi Party and the leaders of the Country. So they all are very important leaders of Germany at this point. Three years later March 12, 1933 the fist concentration camp opened. This was Hitlers doing Fonzo, Hans, and Norbert had nothing to do with it. They where very upset and they advised him to not get it but he insisted. They said it would be bad for him if he wants to become president but he said he had bigger plans then just being president and they didn’t really know what he meant. They where not sure about the path that Hitler was taking but they would give him some time. Maybe the power was just getting to his head and he would culm down and stop doing crazy things like that. About two weeks later March 23, 1933 Enabling Act gives Hitler dictation power. So that means that Norbert no longer has any pow er he’s just a powerless vice president. To be specific it hypothesized that if the amygdaloid complex (AC) was primarily involved with the formation of long-term memory during emotionally arousing situations, then the PET analysis would reveal AC activity related to retention of the relative emotional, but not relatively neutral, films. The experiment used eight right-handed male subjects between 20 and 24 years old. While at first it was not clearly stated why the subjects used were all the same, but women, left-handed people, and subjects of differing ages were purposely omitted in favor of right-handed males of a specific age for use as a control. These subjects were shown two videos, one with emotionally neutral film clips (N) and one with emotionally arousing film clips (E). Each video contained 12 clips. The subjects were asked to rank each film on the basis of emotionality from 0 (being the lowest) to 10 (being the highest.) The videos were also ranked on how well the subject understood each film on a scale from 0 to 10. The E and N films did not differ in their level of understandability. The films were ordered in such a way that it would maximize the chances of detecting glucose differences between E and N sessions. Since positron emission tomography was used, this was a good idea because most of the measured activity would relfect the first 15-20 minutes of tracer reuptake. Three weeks after the experiment, the subjects were asked to recall as many film clips as possible from both film sessions. As expected the E films were ranked significantly higher than the N films.
